Method

  1. Put the strawberries (300 g), banana (1 ripe banana), yoghurt (150 g), orange juice (150 ml), honey (1 tsp) and vanilla (¼ tsp) in a blender.

  2. Blend for 1 minute, until completely smooth. If using fresh fruit, add a handful of ice and blend again for an ice-cold drink.

  3. Taste, adding a little more honey if the strawberries are sharp, or a splash more juice if too thick. Pour into glasses and serve straight away.

Chef’s notes

  • Frozen strawberries and a frozen banana make it thick and cold without diluting it with ice.
  • For a dairy-free version, use a plant yoghurt or more orange juice.
  • For a more filling breakfast, blend in 2 tbsp rolled oats, as one of the most-rated Allrecipes smoothies does.

How this recipe was developed

We compared Miriam Nice’s strawberry smoothie on BBC Good Food with the two most-rated strawberry smoothies on Allrecipes.

  • Strawberry, banana, orange. BBC Good Food (4.7/5 from 62 ratings) blends 175 g strawberries per glass with a small banana and 100 ml orange juice; we keep that base for two.
  • Yoghurt and vanilla. Allrecipes’ B and L’s Strawberry Smoothie (4.7/5 from 1,186 ratings) adds plain yoghurt and vanilla; we add both, with less sugar.
  • Oats for breakfast. Allrecipes’ Strawberry Oatmeal Breakfast Smoothie (4.4/5 from 1,250 ratings) adds oats and frozen strawberries; we give oats as an option.
