Hotel Groups

The major UK, US and international hotel groups: where they operate, how many hotels they run, what makes each one different and the star range of their brands.

  • 17 hotel groups
  • UK, US & international
  • Figures with sources

The groups are listed by where they are based, with UK groups first. Hotel counts come from each company’s own latest results, annual report or fact sheet, and the date of each figure is shown. Groups count in different ways (some include serviced apartments or hotels still being built), so treat the numbers as a guide to size, not an exact league table.

UK hotel groupsGroups based in the UK, from budget to luxury. IHG is UK-headquartered even though most of its hotels are abroad.

US hotel groupsThe big American groups. All of them have hotels in the UK too.

International hotel groupsEurope, Asia and Canada.

About the star ratings

Hotel groups don’t award stars themselves. In the UK, stars are given by the AA or by VisitEngland, VisitScotland and Visit Wales, and every country runs its own scheme, so the same brand can be rated differently in different places. The star ranges here describe the typical level of each group’s brands, from budget to luxury. Check the individual hotel for its actual rating.
